Double Olympic champion Sun Yang surprised the spectators yesterday with his decision not to race in the men’s 1,500m freestyle final. After the finish, the athlete sat down for a press conference to explain his decision to journalists. It turned out that after a warm-up before the final heat the Chinese athlete felt weak, that’s why he pulled out of the race. Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri earned gold.

“I am very sorry that I couldn’t take part in the 1,500m freestyle. When I started training today, my heart didn’t feel great so I had to pull out of the race. I have swum in many heats, it was difficult for me and I felt some pain in my heart. I train a lot and it must have been the reason,” Sun Yang, who had shown the third result in the semifinal, said to journalists.

All in all, these Championships turned out to be quite successful for the swimmer, who won gold medals in the 400m and 800m freestyle and silver in the 200m freestyle.

“I think that Team China and I performed very well. It’s a pity that I did not manage to compete in the 1,500m race,” the athlete added. After the Championships, he promised to undergo health check back home in China.

“Our goal is to become a leading swimming nation and to successfully compete against swimmers from Europe and America,” announced the athlete after his 800m victory. The goal is achieved and we wish Sun Yang good health and new victories.
