Gregorio Paltrinieri snatches men's 1,500m freestyle world title

The fifth final heat of the closing day of the 16th FINA World Championships finished a moment ago in Kazan. Seven best swimmers of the world fought for spots on the podium in the men's 1,500m freestyle race.

Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri became the world champion in this event, covering the distance in 14:39.67. He was followed across the finish line by Connor Jaeger of the United States who touched home with a time of 14:41.20. Bronze was claimed by Canadian swimmer Ryan Cochrane who stopped the watch at 14:51.08.

By the way, two-time Olympic gold medallist and repeat world champion Sun Yang was seen as the major contender for the top podium in this event. Earlier he had earned three medals: two golds and one silver. However, Sun Yang pulled out of the competition and only seven swimmers competed for medals.
