The Closing Ceremony of the 16th FINA World Championships has already gotten underway. Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Prime Minister, Dr. Julio C. Maglione, FINA President, Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary, Rustam Minikhannov, Interim President of the Republic of Tatarstan, are attending the event.

A vibrant closing of the 16th FINA World Championships will be dedicated to water’s vital powers. Since the Opening Ceremony was a fable through which every single person could get to know themselves and people around better with the help of various water conditions, the Closing Ceremony will emphasise the key role of water in the existence of all living beings, including a human one. The Closing Ceremony introduction is the logical continuation of the Opening Ceremony where everything was focused only on water.

The spectators are about to take an active part in the ceremony. All those present at the venue will be provided with a snow-white cloak, and by putting them on they will form a gigantic projection screen, enabling the spectators not only to become an important part of the scenery but also direct performers of the show.

The vital link between a human being and water is introduced in the beginning. It is not even a link but a human being’s direct dependence on water. The rivers dry out, the trees stop bearing fruit, the flowers and plants die away without water. The stage turns into a deserted place in the wink of an eye. Once there used to be a strong and fertile land but with water’s disappearance the life also seemed to abandon this place. Tired and exhausted people came up to the stage showing and proving that without water a person is absolutely helpless. 36 artists expressed these unbelievably huge emotions to the audience. Since the drought didn’t turn out to be the most severe punishment, people also get to experience the real storm which brings nothing but heated air and sand.

The firestorm is pulled off by the means of 26 flashes of summer lightning which are 3m high and are activated through the director’s remote control. Since it is performed indoors the whole system is provided with the multilevel protection.

Desert habitants start performing a rain making rite. A song Thirst by Irakli Minadze from the Sunny from the Moon band, which was composed specially for the Closing Ceremony, serves as a background to their performance.

It was spectators’ turn to perform the role of the nature and bring the long-awaited rain. Clapping their hands, they imitated the sound of first raindrops, this very sound getting gradually louder and stronger bringing the peals of thunder, which subsequently caused the real rain pouring down.

After the opening part of the ceremony ,the spectators welcomed and greeted the high-ranking officials: Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Prime Minister, Dr. Julio C. Maglione, FINA President, Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary, and Rustam Minikhannov, Interim President of the Republic of Tatarstan.

After the flag-raising ceremony, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev addressed the audience: “A huge sports festival has come to an end in Kazan, and I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you. Thanks to you it became a bright, spectacular and unforgettable experience. I want to thank all athletes for a fair play competition, beautiful victories and new records; I also want to thank coaches for preparing champions, spectators for supporting athletes, volunteers and organisers for staging the Championships. And of course I want to thank Kazan, the city that loves sports and proved once again its ability to host sporting events of any level. It’s the first time Russia hosts the World Aquatics Championships. We happily welcomed almost 3,000 athletes representing 190 nations and did everything possible to ensure that Kazan became a lucky city for you. I’m confident that these Championships inspired you for further victories and for overcoming your own records. I wish you to retain the thrill of competition and these emotions that are so important in sport. And as they say in aquatic sports, I wish you calm waves. Thank you Kazan!”

“We’ve come to the end of the most memorable FINA World Championships in Kazan where we have written one of the most brilliant pages in the FINA history. In our aquatic disciplines, the stars of the five continents have shown to the world the value of our sport. Thank you to the remarkable performances and efforts.
