The first final heat has concluded as we speak at the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan. Top eight swimmers of the world fought for medals in the women’s 50m butterfly event.

Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom was first to finish the race with a personal best time of 24.96. She touched the wall first and updated the Championships record. Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark came second after stopping the watch at 25.34. Bronze went to China’s Lu Ying who covered the distance in 25.37.

“It took me six years of very hard work to perfect my tactics. Every single year my time was shortening by several seconds, my speed was improving. And now I have the result I've been striving for. What about other heats? My chances are likely to be good especially in the 50 m butterfly heat but I’m not so sure that I’ll be able to set a new record in that heat as well. As for my freestyle skills, I am sorry to say they are not as perfect as I would like them to be. However it won’t distract me from contending for gold. In all the other heats I believe my chances are also pretty high,” said Sarah Sjostrom in one of her earlier interviews.
