Australian Bronte Campbell, being third in the women’s 100m freestyle semifinal, earned the world champion crown in the decisive race, touching home in 52.52.

“It was unbelievable to be on the podium with my sister Cate. We were standing on the podium and singing our country’s anthem. It was absolutely amazing to share this moment with her. This doesn’t happen very often, so I am very proud that we did it today. I can say that we stuck to our family tactics in the final event. We made the Campbell sisters’ sandwich. We accomplished what we had planned and longed for, Australia having gold and bronze in its medal collection now,” the champion said after the race.

“The first heat was incredibly emotional for us. At last the Australian team has started to win medals,” Bronte added at the press conference. By the way, the Australian swimmer has been dreaming about the gold medal since she was 14, the age she started swimming. The sisters have the same coach but they are very different athletes, so some things they do separately and their training programmes are different.

“So far our national team claimed two gold medals and two bronze ones. It is an incredible feeling to share the podium with such wonderful athletes. I am also happy for my little sister; both of us did a great job today,” Cate Campbell, the bronze medallist, said.

“I’ve done many races over the last few days. Today’s final was pretty challenging because I was competing with such amazing swimmers as the Campbell sisters. That is why I guess my time is not that bad for this race although next year I am definitely about to work harder, to train more and as a result to show a better result,” commented Sarah Sjostrom, the silver medallist of the event.

According to Sarah Sjostrom, the Campbell sisters seem to be quite friendly girls, always setting a positive tone before the start. She also admitted that she had expected a better result. Since butterfly is her main discipline and she doesn’t always know how to do freestyle properly, that’s why she said she will need more training.
