The gold medal was claimed by Kanako Watanabe of Japan who covered the distance in 2:21.15. American swimmer Micah Lawrence was the second fastest swimmer in the race touching the wall in 2:22.44. The most exciting struggle unfolded for bronze. Rikke Moller Pedersen of Denmark, Jessica Vall of Spain, Jinglin Shi of China stopped the watch at the same time, 2:22.76, which resulted in all the three female swimmers sharing the third spot on the podium.
