Today, two swimming powerhouses – China and the United States – were dominating the Kazan Arena Stadium’s swimming pool where 5 sets of medals were contested. China is beginning to take a lead in water sports, and it was 2-2 in today's unofficial faceoff with the Americans.

The 200m individual medley gold was claimed by 5-time Olympic champion, the leader of the US national swimming team and legendary swimmer, Ryan Lochte, who just like Michael Phelps, will be setting an example for his team.

Ning Zetao took the world title in the 100m freestyle event. In the final, he overtook Australian Cameron McEvoy, who earlier outsprinted him in the semifinal. Zetao became the first Asian athlete to take gold in a short-distance event at the World Championships, so his victory was a gift for the entire Asia. During a press conference he mentioned legendary Soviet and Russian swimmer Alexander Popov as his role model and added that his training in Australia could have been a recipe for his successful performance.

Japanese athlete Natsumi Hoshi won the 200m butterfly final. A year ago, the swimmer underwent surgery and barely performed in the Championships, that’s why her comeback definitely deserves a great deal of respect. At a press conference, she mentioned Asian athletes’ clear progress, which was confirmed by the fact that she shared the podium with a representative from China's national team.

Team Croatia is the first finalist in the men’s water polo tournament. The defending Olympic champion forced the Greeks to back off and settle for the 3rd place match.

The second finalist was the Serbian team that won today’s nerve-wrecking match against Italy. Apparently, the Italians who had beaten the Hungarians – the reigning world champions – in the quarterfinal, had spent a lot of effort on this, and in the semifinal failed to provide decent resistance to the favourites of the current World Championships.
