Natsumi Hoshi earned the world title in the 200m butterfly final, finishing in 2:05.56. The victory was predictable. In the semifinal, the Japanese swimmer, who is also the London 2012 bronze medallist, showed the best time.

“I am happy to claim gold. Right after the race I could not believe I had won. Only when I climbed the podium, I realised what had happened. When I touched home, I glanced at my teammates and saw them rejoicing, and the sense of reality hit me. I met my coach in the warm-up pool, I had failed to find him right after the heat, he said that I had done a great job and performed very well. I saw tears in his eyes and I almost broke into tears myself,” the champion confessed.

It was not that easy for Natsumi Hoshi to win. Since she had a surgery last year, it took her too much effort to gear up for the World Championships and perform well. However, her primary goal for the FINA Worlds was to make it into the final.

The journalists also asked her about her personal opinion on a surprisingly successful performance of Chinese swimmers.

“Another Asian athlete, Zhang Yufei from China, was sharing the podium with me today, she took bronze. Strangely enough, there have been no renowned London 2012 medallists on the podium today. A new generation of aspiring young athletes has grown up in China. Asian and Chinese athletes are definitely making headway. Two Asian medallists standing on the same podium clearly demonstrate that Asian countries are currently on the right track and have been getting stronger lately,” Natsumi Hoshi said.
