July 24 - August 9, 2015
The intercontinental battle for first place in the women's final promised to be tense, uncompromising and determined, even before the start. On one side was the US national team, the current Olympic champion, and on the other was team Australia, which has not yet known the bitterness of defeat at the 2015 FINA Worlds. Also, the national team from Australia felt a sense of revenge for the defeat by the US in the World League finals in 2015.
In the first half of the match, the opponents took turns to move ahead, but neither team was able to take the lead at 5:5. A lively draw, and the Americans only levelled the score a second before the half-time siren.
After the break, the teams devoted more time to defence, which is understandable, because the price of failure had grown to the cost of the medals contested in the tournament. The Americans proved to be the better defenders, conceding only once in the second half, while able to strike at the opponents' goal three times. The final result was 8:6. Australia has therefore suffered its first defeat at the tournament, and must fight for bronze, while the US has become the first finalist.
