The winner and runners-up of the 16th FINA World Championships took questions from journalists as soon as the men’s 3m springboard final concluded at the Aquatics Palace in Kazan.

“I would like to congratulate all the contenders who are sharing this podium with me. I am very happy with the result in this thrilling final. I would be very pleased if I happened to top the Olympic podium, too. In the lead-up to the final dive, I saw Zakharov’s high score, but I tried not to focus too much on it. I was thinking more about showing my very best. It was more important for me,” noted the now two-time 3m springboard world champion, Chinese diver, He Chao.

Russia’s Ilia Zakharov admitted he was a little disappointed with his second place, because he had a chance to battle for gold.

“I am very satisfied with today’s performance. The final was very intense: beautiful dives, impressive scores. This silver medal is very special for me. Of course, I looked forward to gold, but I was not perfect, so I will work on imperfections. I would like to thank everyone for their support. Crowd here in Kazan is unbelievable, I could really feel their energy. It is clear to me now that in this very event I had more chances of winning gold than in the team event. And to be honest, I am a little bit upset about not topping the podium in the end. Do I know that back there in Saratov my performance was broadcast on a big TV screen? Yes of course, my friends arranged that. I’m so grateful to them all for supporting me back there in my native city. I didn’t want to let them down at all. What about my partner Evgenii Kuznetsov? I feel truly sorry that he couldn’t make it. I am 100% sure that at Rio 2016 we’ll be topping the podium together,” Ilia Zakharov, the silver medallist, stated.

The British diver made a confession: he was not sure about winning this event but sharing the podium with such outstanding athletes and having bronze indeed makes him feel proud.

“It has been an unbelievable event. I guess finishing third after the Olympic champions is priceless. I should be proud of it and certainly keep following this track in the future. What about high diving? Two years ago I climbed up this 27m high platform, looked down and got frightened (he laughs). My thoughts were like this: no one would ever make me dive from this platform,” Jack Laugher said with a chuckle.
