The mixed duet synchronised swimming event is quite possibly the highlight of the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan. Right now it is the most talked about topic. Today Team USA emerged victorious in a fierce fight of 6 competing mixed duets.

Synchro swimmers from Russia, Japan, the USA, Ukraine, Turkey and Italy reached the final in the technical routine. In the preliminaries, the Russian duet took the lead leaving the US synchro swimmers 2 points behind. A slight, a little more than 1 point lead separated the American duet, Bill May and Christina Jones, from their nearest rivals from Italy, Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minisini, whose technical routine was by the way staged by Anastasiya Yermakova, repeat Olympic gold medallist, repeat world and European champion and Russian title holder. Ukraine, Japan and Turkey finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Unlike all the other duets that scored more than 80 points, the Turkish duet could have done better in the preliminaries, where they collected only 70 points. Having an experience at the London Olympic Games, Japanese synchro swimmer Yumi Adachi was clearly about to surprise the audience with her strong technique.

In the final, the Russian mixed duet was performing to the music from the Soviet television show Seventeen Moments of Spring. Performing outside the group definitely benefited Darina Valitova who now displayed her talent from other perspectives. Meanwhile Aleksandr Maltsev added his own touch to an image of a Soviet officer. But the audience was obviously waiting for the appearance of the legendary male synchro swimmer, Bill May. Just standing on the deck at the beginning of their performance, the US mixed duet put up a passionate performance that could hardly leave spectators unmoved. Bill May looked quite happy performing to the jazz music. The US team’s results were so high that they edged out the host duet into the second place. The Ukrainian synchro swimmers unexpectedly did their best and left the Japanese mixed duet almost with nothing, moving them out of the podium places. The Italian duet decided to make it into the bronze medallists and quite succeeded in that. Ukraine, Japan and Turkey took the fouth, fifth and sixth places respectively. Despite some prejudices towards the mixed duets, all the pairs looked very well-balanced. It seems that the mixed duet event is going to have a great and bright future.
