Diving legend Tania Cagnotto arrives in Kazan

21.07.2015, 23:39 Sport
With three days to go to the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan, Tania Cagnotto, 15-time European champion and 7-time world medallist, arrived in the host city together with the Italian national team.

Tania is a European diving legend. They say that 30-year-old Cagnotto’s phenomenal diving skills are a result of an incredible mixture of genes. She was born in a family of divers; her father, Giorgio Cagnotto, was a four-time Olympic champion and her mother, Carmen Casteiner, was a 1976 Olympian. Tania claimed her first medal at the age of 14. She competed at four Olympic Games.

- Tania, can you tell us about your key goals for the 2015 FINA World Championships?

- It’s my last World Championships and all I want is to enjoy participating in it. I will compete in the individual 1m and 3m springboard and synchronised 3m springboard events. I hope I will qualify for the Rio Olympics. After competing there I will conclude my sports career.

- Who are your main opponents?

- There are strong rivals in the Chinese, Australian, Canadian and, of course, Russian teams.

- Tania, your name is very common here in Russia but it’s unusual for Italy. Is there any family story explaining your name’s origin?

- Not, there’s no family story. My mother always liked this name, Tatiana. I know that there’s a nickname for it in the Russian language, ‘Tanyushka’. I like the way it sounds.

The diving competitions will take place at the Aquatics Palace between July 26 and August 2.
