With three months left to the opening of the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan, the host city is welcoming the third leg of the FINA/NVC Diving World Series as part of its preparation for the upcoming sporting event.

The opening ceremony saw the attendance of Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan, Ildar Khalikov. He addressed the audience with a welcome speech.

“Dear friends, I’m happy to welcome you to Tatarstan. It’s a great honour for us to host such a high-profile event as the FINA Diving World Series. Athletes of 13 nations are present here today. For the first time ever, mixed synchro events will be held as part of this tournament. They are also included in the programme of the 16th FINA World Championships. Judges will face quite a challenge – they will need to decide the best of the best. But we are confident that athletes will show good results. We’ll do everything possible to ensure that both judges and athletes will feel at home in Kazan. We wish athletes success and hope to see you all at the 16th FINA World Championships,” the Head of the Tatarstan Government said.

As it usually goes, a press conference was held on the opening day of the tournament to get questions answered by the organisers and sports officials attending the sporting event. Present at the press conference were FINA Diving Technical Committee Chairperson, Kathy Seaman; Secretary General of the Russian Diving Federation, Anatoly Teplyakov; Secretary General of the Executive Directorate for Sports Projects, Ranko Tepavcevic, and Kazan 2015 Ambassador and two-time Olympic champion, Dmitry Sautin.

“On behalf of FINA President Dr. Julio Maglione, I would like to state that I’m very pleased to be here, in Kazan. In just few months this city will play host to the World Championships. Kazan’s sports venues are simply amazing,” said Kathy Seaman.

“We are grateful to FINA for providing us with the opportunity to host such a high-profile event. It’s a perfect occasion for us to test our readiness three months before the start of the world aquatics championships. It’s a really good test for Kazan,” said Ranko Tepavcevic. “We’ve just finished modernising the platform and now it meets all FINA's requirements for hosting World Championships,” he added.

Dmitry Sautin thanked the tournament organisers for inviting him to Kazan and also confirmed that there was a strong possibility that he will compete at the FINA World Masters Championships. “I hope that our athletes will do well in Kazan. I’m surely willing to compete at Masters. After all, unlike training sessions, it brings up completely different emotions,” the renowned athlete concluded.

Medals in the men’s and women’s 10m platform and 3m springboard events will be contested on Day 1 of the World Series.
